Virginia Lawmaker Good to Seek Recount in Narrow GOP Primary Loss

Rep. Bob Good has lost his GOP primary bid in Virginia’s 5th Congressional District against state Sen. John McGuire, a fellow Republican who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump, two weeks after the polls closed on June 18, The Associated Press reported.

The Virginia Board of Elections certified the election results on Tuesday, with McGuire winning by roughly 375 votes, 0.6% margin, according to the AP. Good said he would ask for a recount.

“In a race with nearly 63,000 votes that is separated by a 0.6% margin, Republican voters across the 5th District deserve to know that all legal votes have been accurately counted,” Good’s campaign said in a statement. “We will vigorously pursue that objective over the coming days and weeks, as permitted by Virginia law.”

Trump endorsed McGuire, a former Navy SEAL, in May after Good, who chairs the House Freedom Caucus, supported Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida during the presidential primary. Good subsequently endorsed Trump in January after DeSantis dropped out of the race.

“My life is a testament to the fact that America is the greatest country on this planet, and I’m so honored to have the chance to serve her again,” McGuire wrote in a post on X on June 19. “Thank you to my family, thank you to everyone who helped out on this campaign, thank you to the people who endorsed and supported me, and thank you to Donald J. Trump for believing in me. There are still a few votes left to count, but it’s clear that all paths end with a victory.”

“The entire DC Swamp was aligned against us with over $10 million in attack ads, but with your help we were able to make this race too close to call,” Good wrote in a post on the night of the election. “No matter the outcome, you’ve shown the DC Swamp that you won’t back down from standing for what’s right. Keep the faith and don’t stop fighting now.”

Good suggested there were attempts to interfere with the voting process after the election was deemed too close to call.

Former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., also backed McGuire, Politico reported. Good was one of eight Republicans who voted to oust McCarthy as speaker in October 2023.

Other Republican members came to support the state senator, including Reps. Mike Collins of Georgia, William Timmons of South Carolina, and Warren Davidson of Ohio. Davidson serves as the whip for the House Freedom Caucus, and Timmons previously survived a Good-backed primary challenger.

Good did retain some endorsements among key GOP representatives.

Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida endorsed Good, calling him a “conservative fighter.” Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida also endorsed Good, saying that “there are few people who actually live by conservative principles every single day, and Bob Good is that person.”

Republican Reps. Chip Roy of Texas, Tim Burchett of Tennessee, and Eli Crane of Arizona, among others, also endorsed Good.

AOC Aims to Impeach Supreme Court Justices Over Presidential Immunity Ruling

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., says she intends to file articles of impeachment against Supreme Court justices.

The Supreme Court ruled Monday in Trump v. United States that presidents have immunity from prosecution pertaining to “official acts” taken in office.

Afterward, Ocasio-Cortez said in a post on X that she intends to file articles of impeachment against the justices and that the high court has been ”consumed by a corruption crisis beyond its control.”

“Today’s ruling represents an assault on American democracy,” the New York Democrat wrote. “It is up to Congress to defend our nation from this authoritarian capture.”

I intend on filing articles of impeachment upon our return.

Trump was indicted August 2023 on four felony counts related to an alleged effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

The Supreme Court decided in the 6-3 ruling issued Monday that Trump is entitled to “at least presumptive immunity from prosecution for all his official acts” and maintained that “there is no immunity for unofficial acts.”

The majority opinion was written by Chief Justice John Roberts, who was joined by Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, and Brett Kavanaugh. Justice Amy Coney Barrett joined in part.

The dissenting opinion was written by Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who was joined by Justices Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson.

Majority of Voters Want to Ditch Biden After Disastrous Debate, Poll Shows

The majority of voters want to see President Joe Biden replaced as the Democratic nominee following his debate performance Thursday night, according to a Morning Consult poll.

After the first presidential debate of the 2024 election cycle since the primary season, Biden’s performance against former President Donald Trump left many major Democrats scrambling to soften the blow.

But even with the damage control, 60% of voters—including 47% of Democrats—said Biden should be replaced as the Democratic candidate, according to the poll released Friday.

Of the voters who actually watched the debate, 63% say Biden should be replaced, according to the poll. Among Democrats who watched, 50% say they want Biden gone, while 62% of independents who watched and 75% of Republicans say they agree.

The sentiment was felt even in the upper echelons of the Democratic Party. Within 35 minutes of the debate’s end, top Democrats and media publications began echoing calls to replace Biden altogether.

The New York Times editorial board called for Biden to drop out of the race Friday, asserting that other Democratic leaders are better equipped to take on Trump in the Nov. 5 election.

Amid talks of replacing Biden altogether, 30% of Democratic voters said they think Vice President Kamala Harris should be the new nominee, according to the poll. Another 20% say California Gov. Gavin Newsom should replace Biden, and 9% say it should be Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

Despite the rumors, Newsom has repeatedly downplayed questions about a potential 2024 election bid. After the debate, in an interview with MSNBC, the California governor dismissed questions about the possibility of Democrats’ replacing Biden.

“I will never turn my back on President Biden,” Newsom said. “Never turn my back on President Biden. I don’t know a Democrat in my party that would do so.”

Since the Biden-Trump debate, though, many top Democrats who had previously defended Biden’s mental acuity have avoided commenting on the subject altogether. To voters, the decline in Biden’s mental fitness was apparent, especially after watching the debate.

Prior to the debate, 43% of voters reported that Biden was mentally fit and 41% said they thought he was in good health, according to the poll. Across debate viewers, those numbers worsened afterward, with only 35% saying Biden is mentally fit and 28% saying Biden is in good health.

This trend was reversed for Trump, who had 47% of voters saying he was mentally fit and 52% saying he was in good health, according to the poll. After the debate, those numbers jumped up to 54% of viewers saying he is mentally fit and 62% saying he is in good health.

Across voters, 64% said Biden was too old, while 78% of debate viewers expressed the same sentiment, according to the poll. For Trump, 42% of voters said he was too old, and only 45% of debate viewers agreed.

Biden’s campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Curtis, who was favored to win in many polls, was briefly registered as a Democrat and ran an unsuccessful campaign against Republican candidate Curt Bramble in 2000 for state Senate, according to the Salt Lake Tribune. He returned to the Republican Party in 2007 and has remained in the GOP since then.

Despite polling significantly behind Curtis, Staggs was endorsed by former President Donald Trump and other influential Republicans, including Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy. Trump praised Staggs for being “MAGA all the way” and said Staggs “is all about America First” in a video endorsement.

Staggs was also endorsed by the Utah Republican Party, winning the most votes at the state convention just hours after earning Trump’s endorsement, according to Politico.

Ahead of the voting, Curtis led Staggs by 20 points according to a Noble Predictive Insights poll from June, and was leading Wilson by 23 points according to a June HarrisX poll.
