The Great Sort is under way, as normal people move to red states and liberals move to blue states. (That last is hypothetical and hasnβt actually been observed.) When massive numbers began leaving blue states like California and New York for red states like Texas and Florida, many conservatives worried that those blue staters might bring their bad voting habits with them. Happily, that doesnβt seem to have happened.
This Wall Street Journal story is headlined: βBlue-State Residents Streamed Into South Carolina. Hereβs Why It Stayed Ruby Red.β But it deals with more than one state:
A Wall Street Journal analysis of census data found that a third of [South Carolinaβs] new residents between 2017 and 2021 hailed from blue states and a quarter from red ones, according to census data. β¦
Yet the new arrivals are disproportionately Republican. Estimates from the nonpartisan voter file vendor L2 suggest about 57% of voters who moved to South Carolina during that time are Republicans, while about 36% are Democrats and 7% are independents. That places them roughly in line with recent statewide votes in South Carolina.
It shouldnβt be surprising that when conservatives leave liberal states, they likely will move to conservative ones. The same thing is happening in states other than South Carolina:
The Palmetto State is a prime example of why a yearslong wave of migration to the South has largely failed to change its partisan tint. Many people who leave blue states are Republicans gravitating toward a more politically favorable new home.
In Florida, for instance, 48% of people who moved there between 2017 and 2021 came from blue states while 29% came from red states, Census figures show. Among those who registered to vote, 44% are Republicans, 25% are Democrats and 28% are nonpartisan, according to L2 data. Texas also has a heavier flow of newcomers from blue states but a greater share who L2 data estimates are Republican.
There is much more at the link; it is fun to see Democrats try to spin the numbers:
McDougald Scott and other South Carolina Democratic officials are working to target these new voters and persuade them to vote Democratic by focusing on issues like educationβ¦
I live in a blue state (for the time being, anyway) where the public schools are almost unbelievably bad. To be fair, though, the schools in New York and California are likely worse.
β¦infrastructureβ¦
Have these people never driven on a highway in California?
and healthcareβ¦
What about healthcare? Most people get health insurance through their jobs, and jobs are much more plentiful in red states. Blue states spend incomprehensible amounts of money on Medicaid, but that isnβt exactly a magnet for desirable new inhabitants.
β¦which she believes the Republicans are neglecting.
Apparently millions of Americans who are moving from blue to red states do not agree. Perhaps this is what it comes down to:
She said South Carolinaβs limited access to abortionβwhich is banned at six weeks of pregnancyβis also something that crosses party lines.
Right. Hey, blue state economies may suck, crime may be rampant, taxes may be too high, government may be corruptβbut if the occasion arises, you can always kill your baby. This is the sales pitch my stateβs liberal government is actually trying to implement: come here to get an abortion or a sex change operation, especially if you are a kid! Somehow, it doesnβt seem to be working.
The bottom line is that the Great Sort continues to benefit Red America. The question is, to what extent is the out-migration of normals locking liberalism into the blue states?
Mitch McConnell announced today that he will resign his Senate leadership position in November, while remaining in office through his current term. I have generally thought well of McConnell and believe that on the whole, he has done a good job of leading his caucus. But it is notable that, as far as I know, not a single Republican has expressed regret at his decision.
It was time to go, if only because the geriatric era in Washington needs to end. While nowhere near as debilitated as Joe Biden, McConnellβs health issues in recent years have been visible. It is highly desirable for Republicans not to be seen, like the Democrats, as a party of octogenarians.
What comes next? The Wall Street Journal speculates:
Potential successors, including Sens. John Thune (R., S.D.), John Barrasso (R., Wyo.) and John Cornyn (R., Texas), have been quietly positioning themselves for the day McConnell steps down. Other possible candidates include GOP Sens. Steve Daines of Montana, Rick Scott of Florida and Tom Cotton of Arkansas.
Most of those senators are perceived as more conservative than McConnell, although that may be largely because McConnell has been in a leadership position for so long. As the leader of a caucus, responsible for negotiating agreements that can actually pass, you canβt be a firebrand backbencherβalthough, to their credit, that description doesnβt fit those the Journal identifies as candidates, either.
Finally, letβs hope Republicans do it the old-fashioned way by agreeing on a new leader behind closed doors, and then anointing him with a show of unanimity. A fiasco like the one we endured in the House of Representatives is to be avoided.
Digging deep into the Super Tuesday primary results, I foresee President Biden facing off for a rematch against President Trump. Can you feel the excitement? The two candidates represent juggernauts within their respective parties.
Letβs take the Democrats first, courtesy of RealClearPolitics. What we have here is one full boatload of results. They raise the question: who is Marianne Williamson and what is she doing here? She is the best-selling author of a variety of books including A Return to Love: Reflections on the Principles of a Course In Miracles, A Womanβs Worth, Illuminata, The Healing of America, and Illuminated Prayers. Her books have been translated into more than twenty languages. Williamson continues to inspire audiences on a global scale as she lectures internationally in the fields of spirituality and new thought.
I infer from the results that Democrats resist the light. They resist new thought. Also, we donβt have a prayer. We need a miracle.
Bidenβs presents himself as a throwback to the old-fashioned Democratic Party, yet he has adopted the policies of partyβs far left. Most prominent among these policies is the opening of our borders and the implicit rejection of the sovereignty of the United States. Over the past three-plus years these policies have wrought great damage. Biden wants to test the outer limits of Adam Smithβs proposition that βThere is a great deal of ruin in a nation.β One canβt help but wonder if we can put ourselves back on track.
Itβs not Joe Bidenβs Democratic Party. Itβs the woke leftβs Democratic Party. Itβs the party of those who say the things which are not.
Biden made an appearance during the narrow window of his waking hours yesterday. He appeared to have dropped in from outer space. He sounded like he had not been briefed since he blasted off from his homeworld. J.B., phone home.

On the Republican side of Super Tuesday (also courtesy of RCP), President Trump wrapped up the Republican nomination. Nikki Haley will suspend her campaign later this morning.
This is Donald Trumpβs Republican Party. If President Trump were to keel over and leave us with an open convention in Milwaukee next July, I assess the odds that the delegates would turn to Haley at zero. It would be a politician in the mold of Trump β probably Ron DeSantis, or perhaps J.D. Vance or Vivek the Mistake. Trump has transformed the Republican Party. By contrast with Biden and the Democrats, he has stamped the party in his image.
I am surprised by the not insubstantial fraction of votes that Haley pulled yesterday. Some portion of the Haley represents Democrats voting in open primaries. Haley won Vermont, but even if she were the nominee she would lose it in November. Vermont is a socialist state. Iβm not talking about Vermont. Assuming Trump can survive the Democratsβ lawfare, he cannot win without a united Republican Party. He has some work to do to put the Republican house together. His choice for vice president could help.
It is difficult to project the state of play in the coming months. My crystal ball is cloudy. Much depends on the course of the Democratsβ lawfare against Trump and, to a lesser extent, the nature of the campaign Trump runs. I think he best serves his own interests at this point when he is out of the news and provides the alternative to Biden. If the election can be reduced to a binary choice, Biden should lose. The Democratsβ lawfare means to preclude that.
Yesterday brought more news of the illegal immigration that Biden has invited, inflicted, facilitated, fostered. Bidenβs derelictions in office are historic in nature. The Daily Mail reports, for example, βBiden administration ADMITS flying 320,000 migrants secretly into the U.S. to reduce the number of crossings at the border has national security βvulnerabilities.'β The New York Post reports βElon Musk says Biden flying 320K βunvettedβ migrants into the US sets stage βfor something far worse than 9/11.ββ Elon Musk β heβs no dummy.
The true numbers involved in the invasion that Biden invited are staggering, whatever they are, as are the secondary effects. As I say, we need a miracle, or something like it.
Senator Katie Britt of Alabama delivered the Republican response to Joe Bidenβs SOTU speech. Not many people watch these rejoindersβfor that matter, not too many watch the SOTUβbut Brittβs response is getting a fair amount of buzz. She likely was chosen to contrast with Bidenβs angry, more or less demented persona; if so, she played that contrast to the hilt.
Her speech was really a thespian performance, and not my style at all. But she prioritized illegal immigration, and was highly effective on that issue. Her appeal was directed to swing voters, especially women. And as performances go, it was very skillful. Check it out:
This is a good complement to Steveβs post immediately below. Why did Democrats decide, seemingly in unison, that it would be a good idea to enable millions of illegal immigrants? Because they (or, in any event, their children) will be voters, and the Democrats assumed they could count on minority votes for many years to come.
But that may have been a miscalculation:

This is part of the broader realignment of the parties. The leftβs current obsessionsβthe βtransβ movement, global warming, the war on food and gasoline, and so onβare of no good whatsoever to working people. They are of interest primarily to wealthy whites, especially wealthy white women. Blue collar minorities, like other working people, are not stupid. They can see that it is the Republicans whose policies actually help them, and they are starting to vote accordingly.
John and I found the protracted humiliation of Kevin McCarthy in connection with his election to be Speaker of the House a clown show. By contrast, Steve Hayward looked mostly on the bright side in βIn re: Speaker McCarthy β dissents and concurrences.β
It is at least worth noting that the GOP majority is dissipating. The clown show set the stage for the shrinking of the small GOP House majority to a number asymptotically approaching zero.
It empowered Matt Gaetz to trigger the chain of events leading to McCarthyβs ouster from the Speakerβs chair. I decried that development in βGaetz of Eden.β Has anyone asked Gaetz what good he did in sacking McCarthy?
McCarthy was deposed this past October. It seems like ancient history. McCarthy subsequently resigned his House seat effective December 31.
I have here in my hand a list of names. According to the list, among the Republicans getting out of Dodge with McCarthy are Reps. Bill Johnson (effective January 21), Ken Buck (effective yesterday), Mike Gallagher (effective April 19), and George Santos, whose departure was involuntary.
βNormally theyβre trying to talk people out of [retiring],β one House Republican told Axios. βNow weβre at a point where weβre trying to talk them out of leaving early.β It may or may not be a portent of trouble for Speaker Johnson and it may or may not be a portent of the coming Democratic majority, but itβs not good.

A Nebraska state legislator is transitioning from blue to red after his own party censured him for having a pro-life stance. Nebraska state Sen. Mike McDonnell officially left the Democratic Party last week after 40 years and became a Republican.
InΒ a written statement explaining his decision, McDonnell wrote: βI have asked the Democratic Party to respect my religious based pro-life position. Instead over the last year they have decided to punish me for being pro-life.β
Last month, the Nebraska Democratic PartyΒ voted to censure McDonnell, a Catholic, over his pro-life record, contending that his stance βadversely affected the reproductive rights of Nebraskans and the rights of transgender individuals in the state.β
Douglas County Democrats alsoΒ votedΒ in January to deny party funding to McDonnell due to his votes against abortion measures and against gender-transition procedures for minors.
βThe state Democratic Party voted to censure me because I am pro-life,β McDonnell wrote. βBeing a Christian, a member of the Roman Catholic Church and pro-life is more important to me than being a registered Democrat. Today I am changing my party affiliation to Republican.β
InΒ a speechΒ addressing his decision, McDonnell explained that he registered as a Democrat in 1984 and ran for the state Legislature in 2016.
βI wanted to see how we could grow our state and reduce property taxes at the same time,β he said. βI asked the Democratic Party of Douglas County to respect that Iβm pro-life, that Iβm a member of the Roman Catholic Church, and my beliefs are based on that. But Douglas County Democrats, instead of respecting that, they decided to punish it. β¦ I continued to vote pro-life.β
βThis is not an easy decision,β the state senator added. βAfter 40 years of being a registered Democrat, having your grandfather tell you when youβre 10 years old, βWhat are we? Weβre Irish, weβre Catholic, and weβre Democrats.β That kind of stuck with me.β
Pointing to his new Republican Party colleagues, McDonnell said: βOver the last year, regardless of my decision [on] switching parties, they have been so supportive. β¦ We had great discussions about what the Republican Party is doing, where theyβre trying to go, how I potentially could fit in there. But the greatest thing about [it] is now I can participate again.β
U.S. Sen. Pete Ricketts, R-Neb., a former governor of the state,Β respondedΒ to McDonnellβs decision by writing on X: βI am pleased to welcome Sen. Mike McDowell to the Republican team.β He added: βThe extreme new Democrats are pushing commonsense officials and voters to our party.β
McDonnell is far from the only Catholic abandoning the Democratic Party due to what many consider mandatory abortion extremism.
Recent studiesΒ showΒ that white American Catholics have been drifting away from the party for decades, but in increasing numbers over the past two decades, coalescing instead around the GOP.
A survey of Michigan votersΒ foundΒ last month that former President Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee credited with appointing three justices to the U.S. Supreme Court who enabled the dismantling of Roe v. Wade, holds a significant lead among Catholic voters over President Joe Biden, a Democrat and self-described Catholic.
A week ago, the Catholic archbishop of Washington, D.C., Cardinal Wilton Gregory,Β called Biden a βcafeteria Catholicβ due to his rejection of the Catholic Churchβs teaching on abortion.
In response to McDonnellβs new party affiliation, Nebraska Democratic Party Chairwoman Jane KleebΒ issued a written statementΒ saying: βThe Nebraska Democratic Party will continue to stand up for reproductive freedom and the human rights of the LGBTQ community.β
Kleeb added: βOur decision to censure Sen. McDonnell was never about him being a pro-life Catholic. Our decision was based on our party reaffirming our core values to protect womenβs ability to make health decisions and to keep politicians out of our personal health decisions.β

A number of Arizona Republicans are rapidly distancing from the stateβs controversial Supreme Court ruling protecting almost all unborn babies from abortions.
The state Supreme Court upheld a 1864 law on Tuesday that bans almost all abortions in Arizona, except when the motherβs life is at risk. In a 4-to-2 decision, the court said that the law is βnow enforceable,β though it will likely not go until effect for a number of weeks.
Though Arizona has a law protecting unborn babies after 15 weeks, Arizonaβs Democrat governor Katie Hobbs signed an executive order in 2023 giving the stateβs Democrat attorney general the power to enforce abortion laws. That attorney general, Kris Mayes, promised not to enforce any protections for the unborn and to βfight like hellβ to protect abortions in the state.
News of the Arizona Supreme Courtβs decision was celebrated by pro-life groups like Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, but it prompted outcry from some Arizona Republicans who had formerly expressed desires to protect as many unborn lives as they could.
Senate candidate Kari Lake, who had previously drawn praise from pro-life groups for her staunch defense of life and exposure of Democratic abortion extremism, announced on Tuesday that she not only believes the old law is βout of step with Arizonians,β but she also wants Hobbs and the state legislature βto come up with an immediate common sense solution that Arizonans can support.β
βUltimately,β she said in a statement wherein she promised to oppose a federal ban on abortion, βArizona voters will make the decision on the ballot come November.β
Lake, during remarks delivered at the American Leadership Forum in 2022, had previously referred to a βgreat lawβ that Arizona had βon the booksβ as she discussed her hope that Roe v. Wade would soon be overturned.
βIf that happens, we will be a state where we will not be taking the lives of our unborn anymore,β she said at the time.
Her campaign did not immediately return a request for comment.
The stateβs former Republican governor, Doug Ducey, issued a similar statement calling on the state lawmakers to βheed the willβ of the people.
βI signed the 15-week law as governor because it is thoughtful conservative policy, and an approach to this very sensitive issue that Arizonans can actually agree on,β he said. βThe ruling today is not the outcome I would have preferred, and I call on our elected leaders to heed the will of the people and address this issue with a policy that is workable and reflective of our electorate.β
Republican Arizona Rep. David Schweikert, one of the most vulnerable Republicans in the state, has publicly expressed gratitude to his mother for choosing last minute not to abort him. He similarly voiced his disapproval of the ruling on Tuesday.
βI do not support todayβs ruling from the AZ Supreme Court,β he said Tuesday in an βXβ post. βThis issue should be decided by Arizonans, not legislated from the bench. I encourage the state legislature to address this issue immediately.β
The congressman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Republican Arizona Rep. Juan Ciscomani, who has described himself as strongly pro-life and supportive of exceptions for rape, incest, and the life of the mother, called the ruling a βdisaster for women and providers,β insisting that the stateβs 15-week-protections for the unborn βprotected the rights of women and new life.β
βIt respected women and the difficult decision of ending a pregnancyβone I will never personally experience and wonβt pretend to understand,β he continued. βAs my record shows, Iβm a strong supporter of empowering women to make their own healthcare choices and I oppose a national abortion ban.β
Ciscomani similarly did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In a statement celebrating the overturn of Roe v. Wade in June 2022, Ciscomani had said that he βwill always defend life as a member of Congress.β
βAs a husband and a father, I believe that life is precious, and as a country, we must protect women and children in every way possible,β he said at the time.
The slew of statements follow former President Donald Trumpβs Monday announcement that each state should follow βthe will of the peopleβ and passΒ state-specific laws on abortion. Β Β
βMy view is now that we have abortion where everybody wanted it from a legal standpoint, the states will determine by vote or legislation, or perhaps both, and whatever they decide must be the law of the land, in this case, the law of the state,β Trump said in a video posted Monday morning on Truth Social. Β
TrumpβsΒ position on abortionΒ was unclear heading into the election, though the former president appointed three Supreme Court justices who ultimately made it possible to overturn Roe v. Wade in June 2022 by a majority vote βΒ Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett.
βI want to thank the six justices: Chief Justice John Roberts, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett, and Neil Gorsuch,β Trump said. He called them βincredible people, for having the courage to allow this long-term, hard-fought battle to finally end.β
βThis 50-yearΒ battle over Roe v. WadeΒ took it out of the federal hands and brought it into the hearts, minds, and vote of the people at each state,β Trump added. βNow itβs up to the states to do the right thing.βΒ
Further clarifying his view on abortion, he said he supports βexceptions for rape, incest, and the life of the mother.β
βYou must follow your heart on this issue, but remember, you must also win elections to restore our culture and in fact to save our country, which is currently and very sadly a nation in decline,β he added.
Trump also criticized Democratsβ extreme abortion positions in his remarks, saying: βDemocrats are the radical ones in this position, because they support abortion up to andΒ even beyond the ninth month. The concept of having an abortion in the later months and even execution after birthβand thatβs exactly what it is, the baby is born, the baby is executed after birthβis unacceptable, and almost everyone agrees with that.βΒ

FIRST ON THE DAILY SIGNAL: The head of the Arizona Freedom Caucus condemned the βcalculated political decision-makingβ exhibited by Arizona Republicans who sought to distance themselves from the stateβs most massive pro-life victory yet.
Some high-profile Arizona Republicans had decried news on Tuesday that the stateβs Supreme Court had upheld an 1864 law protecting almost all unborn babies in the state, except when the motherβs life is at risk.
Senate candidate Kari Lake, former Gov. Doug Ducey, Rep. David Schweikert, and Rep. Juan Ciscomani, were among the Republicans who condemned the news and suggested that pro-abortion legislation was needed to rectify the situation.
But the Arizona Freedom Caucus, led by Arizona state Sen. Jake Hoffman, came out swinging on Tuesday evening, declaring in a statement that the court βupheld the intent of the legislature, and preserved the rule of lawβ by βruling that the pre-Roe law will remain effective.β
βWe will not compromise on the core value of cherishing and protecting life,β the statement said. Numerous members of the stateβs Freedom Caucus promoted the post on βXβ and voiced their support.
βThis is why I am proud to be a member of the AFC,β said state Rep. Rachel Jones, and state Rep. Austin Smith chimed in, βWe will continue to lead the way and be unabashedly in favor of supporting both the mother and the unborn child.β
In a phone interview with The Daily Signal on Wednesday, Hoffman emphasized that life is not an issue Republicans should be willing to compromise on.
βWe should be resolute in our convictions and in our principles and in our party platform, to be willing to make the case that we cherish life, and that we are going to do everything we can to protect it,β said the Arizona Freedom Caucus chair.
This respect for life should include caring for mothers and families as well, he said.
βWhat the Arizona Freedom Caucus saw, is this calculated political decision-making yesterday, with people diving for the bushes and effectively abandoning everything that they claim to believe in for the last decade, two decades, three decades in some cases,β he said.
βWe just donβt believe thatβs how we should operate in this environment that is truly a battle between good and evil. So our statement was simply based on our convictions, and it certainly did send a warning flare up into the sky for those who were hiding in the bushes that no, we need to stand and unabashedly for protecting life and for our principles,β Hoffman added.
Though Arizona has a law protecting unborn babies after 15 weeks, Arizonaβs pro-abortion, Democrat governorΒ Katie HobbsΒ signedΒ an executive order in 2023Β giving the stateβs Democrat attorney general the power to enforce abortion laws. That attorney general, Kris Mayes, promised not to enforce any protections for the unborn and to βfight like hellβ to protect abortions in the state.
Hoffman described Arizona Democrats as supportive of βripping children apart, limb by limb, in the wombβ and working actively to βnormalize abortionβ and create a βculture of abortion on demand until the moment of birth.β
βThis is deeply embedded in Democrat culture,β he said, speculating that some of the reactions from Arizona Republicans on Tuesday may have been a reaction to the energy of the massive abortion messaging machine that is Democratic leadership.
On Wednesday, former President Donald Trump weighed in on the Arizona ruling, asked by reporters if the ruling went too far.
βYeah they did, and that will be straightened out,β he said.
βAs you know, itβs all about statesβ rights,β he added. He also said he thinks Hobbs will βbring it back into reason.βΒ

In doing so, Massie joined the motion to vacate push against Johnson launched by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., in March. Massie is theΒ first other Republican to back GreeneΒ in the effort.
βI just told Mike Johnson in conference that Iβm co-sponsoring the Motion to Vacate that was introduced by [Rep. Johnson,Β according to NBCβs Jake Sherman, saidΒ that heβs not resigning.
βI am not resigning. And it is in my view an absurd notion that someone would bring a vacate motion when we are simply here trying to do our jobs,β Johnson said.
Johnsonβwho became the speaker after the ouster of his predecessor as speaker, former Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif.,Β by a motion to vacate in Octoberβhas been facing increasing pressure from conservatives in the House. In particular, Johnson has been criticized for working with Democrats on a bill to fund the Ukraine war effort.
Johnson continues to receive the support of former President Donald Trump. Trump said on Friday that Johnson is doing a βvery good jobβ when the two appeared together at Trumpβs Mar-a-Lago home in Florida on Friday.

Johnson was elected House speaker in October with 220 Republicans supporting him. Johnsonβs election came after McCarthy was removed as speaker after eight Republicans and all Democrats voted against him.
Since Johnson became speaker, McCarthy and Rep. Ken Buck, R-Colo., resigned and left Congress. Former Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y., was expelled in a House vote, and Rep.
