Body Positive and anti-diet movements are normalizing obesity, and some dietitians and researchers, funded by fast-food companies, are on board.
βFat is fineβ is the new mantra of those who want fat people to be accepted in spite of how they look and despite health problems associated with obesity. βBody positivityβ is defined as βa movement where people whose bodies may not be seen as acceptable by society feel good about themselves and their looks.β The body positive movement, along with a related βanti-dietβ movement and βhealth at every size,β are normalizing fat, which is discouraging people from losing weight or getting fit. The New York Times decried social media, such as Instagram, where influencers are pushing the notion that boys should be muscular or girls should be slim.
Obesity in the US has reached epidemic proportions, affecting 34% of adults and 15-20% of children, according to data from the National Institute of Health (NIH). Additionally, 17% of children and 68% of adults qualify as overweight, marking the first step toward obesity.
America leads the world not only in terms of obesity rates but also in athletic people, fat foods, and diet foods. So, food manufacturers, weight loss companies, and fitness equipment manufacturers can make money whether people lose weight or not. The food companies can even make people fat and then sell them the cure.
WebMD said, βPeople who are overweight can be considered healthy if their waist size is less than 35 inches for women or 40 inches for men, and if they do not have two or more of the following conditions: High blood pressure, high blood sugar, and high cholesterol.β It goes on to recommend that overweight people not gain additional weight and that they should βlose a few pounds.β However, a 40-inch waist for a man would suggest that he needs to lose a lot more than a few pounds.
Even the standards of research are being changed. WebMD stated, βObesity and its related diseases claim many lives each year. The annual figure was initially estimated at 400,000, but was recently revised to 112,000, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.β It seems a bit odd that established research needed such a broad adjustment. Additionally, if roughly 51% of the population is obese, then there are over 173 million obese people in America. If only 112,000 of them die of obesity, it doesnβt seem like as much of a threat. And this is consistent with findings of a study cited by WebMD: βOne thing that came as a huge surprise was that the study found no increased risk of death for overweight people.β
At the same time that articles are telling people that they can be fat and healthy, and WebMD claims that fat people do not run a higher risk of death, the University of Chicago Medicine reports that βThirteen types of cancer and 200 other health conditions are related to obesity.β
It seems counterintuitive that being fat is healthy, and it is a bit suspicious that the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United States NIH both declared obesity an epidemic, but WebMD and other sources are claiming that there is little or no connection between fat and poor health. The recent rise of βwokeismβ has also infiltrated the obesity issue, using the term βfat shaming.β According to The Washington Post, doctors can be guilty of fat shaming, and βfatphobia persists in medicine.β
This bizarre movement of not being able to say things that are true but offensive is at such an extreme that a morbidly obese fashion model named Tess Holliday, who weighs 260 pounds and wears a size 22, told the media that she identifies as anorexic. The news story was edited on YouTube because the word βanorexicβ cannot pass the censors. Now, we arenβt even allowed to say the names of health problems or identify them as health problems.
A quick Google search reveals any number of articles with titles like βThereβs No Such Thing as βJunk Foodββ and βWhy Thereβs No Such Thing as βGoodβ or βBadβ Foods.β There have been allegations that fast food companies have been funding researchers and influencers to promote the anti-diet and body-positive image.
It is well-documented that fifty years ago, sugar companies paid researchers to promote the notion that dietary fat, not sugar, was the cause of obesity and ill health. More recently, The Washington Post reported that General Mills, the company which makes Cocoa Puffs and Lucky Charms cereals, has been pushing the anti-diet movement. The company sponsored a campaign citing anti-diet research and condemning βfood shaming.β They offered giveaways and sponsorship to registered dietitians who tagged their cereal endorsements with the hashtag #DerailTheShame. General Mills went so far as to pay lobbyists to influence federal policies to keep health information off food labels.
The profit incentive of fast-food companies, combined with the rejection of reality often associated with the βWokeβ movement and the notion that no one should ever be held accountable for their actions, is contributing to the demise of an entire generation by encouraging them to be overweight.
Often, analogies are made between smoking and obesity. The cigarette companies tried to push scientific studies that claimed cigarettes did not cause cancer. Fortunately, the government was not convinced and launched anti-smoking campaigns, stressing the health threat of smoking, eventually leading to a reduction in the percentage of adults who smoked. In 1965, 42% of adults smoked. In 2021, it was only 11.5%.
By pushing a narrative that fat is healthy, the exact opposite is going to happen. The percentage of obese Americans will increase. Fortunately, the fast food companies can fund new research, adjusting the statistics to reduce the number of deaths.

FIRST ON THE DAILY SIGNALβPresident Joe Bidenβs efforts to deflect blame for the border crisis and high cost of living arenβt working with swing voters, according to new polling from Echelon Insights.
An even higher percentage view his administration as a failure.
The survey of 2,401 registered voters in six battleground statesβshared exclusively with The Daily Signalβreveals key insights about swing voters, a segment of the U.S. population who arenβt strongly aligned with either political party.
Asked to rate the Biden administration, 65% of swing voters described it as a failure. A majority of Hispanic men, young voters (18-35), and married women also give the Biden administration a failing grade.
The poll finds 59% of swing voters blame Bidenβs policies for the crisis at the southern border, compared with 23% who say itβs due to factors outside of his control, while 18% are unsure or donβt view it as a problem.
On the issue of inflation and the high cost of living, 51% of swing voters blame Bidenβs policies. According to the survey, 37% think the problem is outside of Bidenβs control, while 13% are unsure or donβt view it as a problem.
Of the issues surveyed, violent crime is the only one that a majority of swing voters donβt blame on Bidenβs policies. In that specific case, 38% attribute a rise in crime to Biden, compared with 39% who think itβs not his doing.
These issues are regularly cited as Americansβ top concerns. They are also contributing to a gloomy outlook on Americaβs future and have resulted in Bidenβs dismal disapproval rating.
Echelon Insights conducted the survey for The Heritage Foundation in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
When asked about the 2024 presidential election, swing voters give former President Donald Trump higher marks on Americaβs biggest issues: addressing immigration and border security, ensuring a strong U.S. economy, maintaining world peace, bringing down the high cost of living, keeping their families safe, supporting the middle class, instilling confidence in America, and protecting rights and freedoms.
Biden outperformed Trump on just two issues: health care costs and student loan debt.
Trumpβs dominance on a wide range of policy issues translates into a strong showing in five of the six states where the survey was conducted. Trump leads in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. Biden had the edge in Wisconsin.
A whopping 73% of swing voters in those six states disapprove of Bidenβs job performance, compared with 40% for Trump. In each of the individual states, Trump holds the advantage.
When asked to rate a conservative governing agenda compared against a liberal agenda, swing voters in all six states favored a plan that grows the economy, reduces the cost of living, cuts government spending, secures the border, and implements tougher penalties for violent criminals.
The conservative agenda performed best in Michigan, followed closely by Georgia.
Swing voters cited the high cost of living as a major concern, worrying about the economic future of their kids, ability to save for retirement, and the cost of health care.
With a national debt of more than $34 trillion and government spending exploding on Bidenβs watch, these voters are more receptive to spending cuts than other ideas such as combating corporate greed and junk fees or increasing taxes on wealthy Americans.
On the issue of border security, swing voters are more likely than the overall population to worry about social services being stretched thin. They also cite drug trafficking and rising crime as problems connected to the massive influx of illegal aliens.
Some of the Trump administrationβs prioritiesβinstituting the Remain in Mexico policy, completing the U.S.-Mexico border wall, and closing the southern border to asylum seekersβrate positively among swing voters.
The survey also asked swing voters about education and the role of parents. By a significant margin, 63% to 30%, they think parents are in the best position to address controversial issues, such as sexuality, with their children.
Echelon Insights conducted the survey March 12-19 among approximately 400 voters in each of the six states. It has a margin of error of +/-2.3 percentage points overall.
